My sister married Geoff Carter whose father Alf(?) Carter was the main signal man in this box for many years. I can remember visiting the signal box in the 1950s as a child. He lived in Athelstan Gardens, Wickford.

I also remember visiting the signal box to see my grandfather, Alf Carter. It was a great adventure to see inside with all the huge levers. There was a good view over the surrounding area. My grandfather was also a keen gardener and when he retired he still used to ride his push bike around Wickford to do other people's gardens for them, for a small fee. He also did the garden out at Battlesbridge of Mr Harvey Hodgson, a local builder and business man.
