Help wanted regarding a hill climb circuit in the area

Bottledown

By Chris Healey

I am doing some research on a hill climb "circuit" which is very vauguely mentioned as having been used in the 1920s in the area which I think might have been Crays Hill. The description is as being on a hill on the road between Billericay and Wickford. Based on my local knowledge I think Crays Hill would have been the most suitable location.  One of the names mentioned is Bottledown as being the course name. This "circuit" must have been quite short lived as this sort of event was banned on public roads quite quickly once the authorities caught up with them.

Does anybody have any information or even pictures of the site / events held there?

The hillclimb in this area was in Langdon Hills. If you go to Laindon and Langdon Hills Community Archive there is a long article on the local hill climb. In its time it was quite famous and they have now called a Langdon Hills estate built on the land where it was held "The Selsey Park Estate", (the most famous hillclimb in the country is called The Selsey Walsh Speed Hillclimb). I have visited it to watch my husband drive up it in a 1932 MG.
